Our Story
Powered by Data was created to address a gap that Ben Jones saw repeatedly throughout his career in the data and analytics industry, and while teaching at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. Organizations were investing heavily in data tools and infrastructure, but many employees lacked the confidence and training needed to work with data effectively. The gap between the data skills companies needed and the skills many people actually had was wide — and growing.
In 2018, Ben decided to act on that insight. After years working in the BI field, he left his role at Tableau to build a company dedicated to helping organizations truly benefit from their data by investing in people, not just technology.
The result was Powered by Data, a parent brand that serves both as a strategic data, BI, and AI consulting firm and as the home for a broader ecosystem of initiatives focused on advancing data capability.
Two key initiatives live under that mission. Data Literacy focuses on teaching people how to fish — helping individuals and organizations build the skills and confidence to understand, analyze, and communicate with data. Data Freelancers, meanwhile, helps organizations catch the fish today by connecting them with experienced data and AI professionals who can deliver real projects and outcomes.
Together, these efforts reflect the core philosophy behind Powered by Data: organizations succeed with data when they both build internal capability and bring in the right expertise to apply it.
